24 November 2010 -- As of 20 November 2010, the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) reported 60 240 cumulative cholera cases including 1 415 deaths at the national level. The case fatality rate in hospitals at the national level is 2.3%, with 67% of the deaths occurring at health services level and 33% at community level.

   Avian influenza – situation in China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Hong Kong, SAR) Disease Outbreak News

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH), Hong Kong, China, has reported a new confirmed human case of H5N1 infection on 17 Nov 2010. The case is a 59-year-old female. She had onset of symptoms on 2 November and was admitted to hospital on 14 November. She was diagnosed to have pneumonia and is now in a critical condition.

   Polio in Congo - update Disease Outbreak News

184 cases of acute flaccid paralysis and 85 deaths have been reported from the site of the acute poliomyelitis outbreak centred in Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo. Four cases have been confirmed to have been caused by wild poliovirus type 1 and laboratory testing continues. The majority of the reported cases and deaths have occurred in the population aged over 15 years.

12 October 2010 ¦ Islamabad - Almost 300,000 suspected malaria cases, including confirmed cases of the severe falciparum-malaria, have been recorded in flood-affected areas of Pakistan since 29 July 2010, an overall number which is slightly above the average annual malaria seasonal levels. The World Health Organization is supporting Pakistan's Ministry of Health Malaria Control Programme, as well as Health Cluster partners, to prevent and control a malaria epidemic in the country.

   Upsurge of kala-azar cases in Southern Sudan requires rapid response Emergencies and disasters

8 October 2010 ¦ Juba, Sudan -- Recurrent outbreaks of visceral leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease also known as kala-azar, have been reported in Southern Sudan, with 6363 cases and 303 deaths (case fatality rate of 4.7%) recorded since outbreaks began in September 2009. The number of cases is more than six times higher than the same period starting in 2007 (when 758 cases were recorded) and 2008 (582 cases). Most affected patients (70%) are children aged under 15 years who already suffer from concurrent malnutrition and other secondary illnesses.
